The mother of missing South Burnett man Luke Fergusson has made a heartbreaking statement on social media following the discovery of human remains at Boondooma Dam on Monday evening, 16km from where her son was last seen.
“We hurt and grieve, and we scream and yell at the injustice of it all,” Ms Bedey said.
“That we may have lost our Lukey in the worst of possible ways.
“To think he died alone, scared, cold and hungry.”
A member of the public discovered the unidentified remains on an Okeden property backing on to Boondooma Dam, 40km west of Murgon, about 5.15pm Monday.
Police declared a crime scene and cordoned off the area on Tuesday morning. Twenty-eight-year-old Luke went missing in June from Proston, and despite a concerted and lengthy search, has never been found.
Boondooma Dam was shut to the public for a time on Tuesday, September 19, reopening about 1pm.
Police are still working to identify the remains.
Luke’s mother, Susanne Bedey, made her statement on the Find Luke Fergusson Facebook page, which was established after the official search was suspended by authorities.
The 28-year-old disappeared from his family’s Proston Abbeywood Rd home at Proston about midday on June 9.
Hundreds of square kilometres of rugged bushland between Proston, Stallworth and Abbeywood, and the immediate surrounds, were scoured by search parties including police, SES, defence force personnel and landholders in the weeks after.
Rescue helicopters and police divers joined at various times, but all to no avail.
The search was scaled back on July 12, 32 days later.
Ms Bedey said on Tuesday she and those who had never given up the search for Luke waited “with terror in our hearts”.
She said it “rips apart your very soul” that “the human you were in trusted (sic) with that you love unconditionally, and you feel you failed him so … and could not protect him, not even from himself”.
“Hold the ones you love close for me tonight … tell them … I love you,” she said.
Ms Bedey’s post was met with an outpouring of support.
Members of the group said Ms Bedey “did not fail him, whatever the outcome” and “as mothers of … children, you are living our greatest fears and I so deeply feel in my heart for you and your family”.
The investigations into the remains are continuing.
