Australia's opioid crisis: "We have an epidemic on our hands"

A young single mother repeatedly called police "c-nts" during an intercept and was found to have cannabis and powerful opioids on her.

Tamica Rose Coman, 22, abused the Noosaville police officers on November 6, 2020, earning herself a court date.

Coman faced Murgon Magistrates Court on Tuesday, May 25, charged with two counts of contravening a police requirement, two counts of possessing dangerous drugs and one count public nuisance.

She pleaded guilty to all charges.

Police prosecutor Pepe Gangemi told the court the contravene requirement charges resulted from Coman failing to attend the Noosa Police Station between November 5-18 and Maryborough Police Station between November 29 and December 10 to provide her identifying particulars.

Sergeant Gangemi said she told police officers she was in a "controlling relationship" at the time and wasn't able to get to the police station.

The remaining charges came from an intercept in Noosaville, with sergeant Gangemi telling the court Coman "was calling the police officers 'c-nts' repeatedly".

A search was conducted, and police found less than a gram of cannabis and "two strips" of Buprenorphine, a powerful opioid.

Coman was represented in court by Mark Oliver, who said the young mother was trying to get her life back on track.

He told the court the 22-year-old had been off drugs for six weeks and was attending her first AA meeting on Friday.

He said she was also attempting to regain custody of her daughter.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair took into account her early plea and placed her on good behaviour bonds to assist in her continued rehabilitation.

"So it's up to you, if you stay out of trouble and attend the drug diversion course, which will assist you in any efforts to be reunited with your child, then you don't have to pay anything," Magistrate Sinclair said.

Coman was sentenced on the drug charges to a $350, six-month good behaviour bond with a drug diversion course ordered.

For the remaining offences, she was sentenced to a second $350, six-month bond.

No convictions were recorded.
