Kingaroy mum Charmaine Rose Weimer fined after drink driving into roundabout while reading text, flees scene

A drink driver took her situation from bad to worse after telling police a distracting text message sent her crashing into a roundabout, before fleeing the scene.

A Kingaroy mum threw herself under the bus after drink driving into a roundabout and fleeing the scene, telling police she’d been distracted reading a lengthy text message.

Appearing before Kingaroy Magistrates Court, Charmaine Rose Weimer pleaded guilty to driving over the general alcohol limit, failing to comply with duties of a driver involved in a crash, and using a mobile phone while driving.

At 7.45pm on May 16, Weimer was involved in a single-vehicle crash in Kin Kora, a suburb of Gladstone, police prosecutor Sergeant Barry Stevens told the court.

“Police arrived at 8pm and observed damage to the Give Way sign, directional sign and a large concrete medium,” Sergeant Stevens said.

Officers located the red Mazda sedan in a car park down the road, however the defendant was nowhere to be found, having already been picked up by friends.

Police located the defendant and administered a breath test, and she produced a reading of 0.64 BAC.

Weimer told police she’d crashed into the centre island of a roundabout after receiving a lengthy text message from her partner while driving.

“She said she‘d been in an argument with her boyfriend, and she didn’t know that she was required to contact police about the damage,”

Representing herself, Weimer said she was very sorry for what had occurred and she’s learnt her lesson.

“I‘m a single mum with two kids, so I’ve definitely learnt my lesson because I know I’m going to lose my licence,” Weimer said.

Weimer was convicted and fined $600 for all three offences, which was referred to SPER, and disqualified from driving for one month.
