Published sentencing documents from Barry’s appearance reveal the attack happened after the 25-year-old got into an argument with his victim’s daughter.

The court heard the knife cut through his neck muscles and left jugular, leaving him bleeding “profusely”.

Judge Glen Cash said Barry’s victim would have died without immediate medical aid including an emergency flight to Brisbane.

“What you did could very easily have resulted in the death of this man, in which case you would have been in the dock of the Supreme Court likely facing a charge of murder,” Judge Cash said.

The victim then tried to “mislead” police about Barry’s involvement during the course of their investigation

Barry also gave police a statement consistent with his victim’s claims during the first interview before ultimately confessing.

The court heard Barry’s criminal record only had two entries, including a wilful damage charge in 2021.

He was born in Ipswich to a father who abused alcohol and drugs, the court heard.

Barry himself turned to those same substances as a result of growing up in an abusive home.

Since the assault the 25-year-old had stopped “abusing alcohol” drinking and was now on medical marijuana.

Barry was sentenced to four years’ jail, to be suspended after 14 months was served.

The remainder of the sentence would be suspended for a further four years.
