Video: Hervey Bay hoon loses control, smashes into shop fence

The owner of a Qld diesel business wants hoons to “own up” to their costly risk-taking after his workshop was damaged for the second time in weeks by out-of-control drivers. WATCH THE VIDEO.

A Hervey Bay business owner wants hoons to “own up” to their mistakes after a car full of teens lost control while drifting and smashed through his security fence in the early hours of Good Friday.

The joy ride, and its painful end outside Hervey Bay Diesel Services, was caught on CCTV when it unfolded shortly before 3am.

The footage shows the car first fishtailing up Southern Cross Cct at Urangan, while two passengers hang their heads and chests out the windows – one in the front passenger seat, and one in back behind the driver.

As the car approaches the business the driver loses control, sending the car into a skid which ends abruptly when its front end smashes into the wire security fence.

The driver and her three passengers all exit the car to inspect the damage and then try to reverse the car back from the wrecked fence.

One of the passengers is forced to help lift the front end as the car is reversed, trailing its now almost entirely detached front bumper behind it.

The four then huddle for several minutes trying to reattach the bumper as best they can.

Once finished, the visibly upset driver slowly walks back to the downed fence and collects several other pieces of the car which have been torn off by the impact.

One of her friends tries to comfort her as they figure out what to do next.

Business owner Tim Barns said on Saturday it was the second time in the past few months hoons had wiped out part of the business.

Part of the front gate had been destroyed by an out-of-control car several weeks earlier.

Mr Barns said he had reported both crashes to the police.

Police have been approached for comment.

Mr Barns said the cost of fixing the fence alone was likely to be in the ballpark of $3000 to $5000.

Then there was the insurance excess, which was likely to have a domino effect on other things too.

“Premiums go up from insurance claims, and the ongoing costs of it,” Mr Barns said.

Hooning was a regular issue in the industrial estate and police were “doing what they can with the resources they have”.

He said the main responsibility lay at the feet of those behind the wheel, particularly when they crashed and damaged other people’s property.

“Own up to your stuff ups,” Mr Barns said.

“If you do it and you do stuff up … own up to it at least.”

A man claiming to be the teen driver’s father has posted online he is deeply disappointed by her behaviour after the car was given to her just months ago and that she will have to find a way to pay.

At the time of publication, no attempts had been made by the teen to apologise or offer compensation.
