An elderly woman ran in fear for her life after a 37-year-old man on a drug bender broke into her home, stripped naked and used her shower before masturbating in front of her.

Aron John William James pleaded guilty in Kingaroy Magistrates Court this week to breaking and entering, entering premises and commit indictable offence, and committing an indecent act with intent to offend.

A 37-year-old homeless man on a drug bender broke into the home of an elderly woman, desperate for a shower and exhausted after walking for nine hours.

The court heard James, who appeared via video link from Maryborough Correctional Centre, had not slept for a week and had walked for nine hours from Kumbia to Kingaroy on the day of his crimes.

He did not know the victim, a 76-year-old woman, but did know her son and knew that he sometimes spent time at his mother’s house.

Mr James walked into the house, stood in the doorway and removed his own board shorts, exposing his genitalia.

He then stripped naked and took a shower.

The court heard when he got out of the shower, he stood naked in front of the victim, masturbating and thrusting his genitalia.

Police prosecutor Sophie Stewart said James was not known to the victim.

“The victim was terrified that the defendant was preparing to seriously assault her,” she said.

The woman ran out of her house while on the phone with emergency services, taking refuge at a neighbour’s home.

James threw a fan out of the bedroom window, and escaped out of the front door before police got there.

He was found in a nearby park by police soon after, still completely naked.

On the same day, he also broke into the Bunya Care disability services office and stole soft drinks, an Esky, picnic bag and other items from the kitchen.

Lawyer Jay Rose told the court that while her client had substantial criminal history, he had no previous history of being charged with an indecent act or similar offence.

Ms Rose said James had gone nine hours without food or water, and was looking for the victim’s son in Kingaroy to have a shower, and eat and drink something.

The court heard James was incoherent at the time of his arrest and could not be interviewed due to experiencing drug psychosis.

His lawyer said he had a long term drug addiction, and become addicted to morphine after being injured in a car accident.

She told the court James had been homeless before being taken into custody and was struggling to deal with his mental health issues, physical pain and drug addiction, however he had the support of his mother and was planning on participating in a drug rehab program.

Magistrate Andrew Sinclair told James he couldn’t go around breaking into houses and “upsetting little old ladies”.

He said the victim was a resilient woman and was starting to recover from the incident with some help.

James was sentenced to two years jail, with a parole eligibility date of July 8, 2025.
