It’s that sombre time of the year when Australians commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of the Anzacs, and all of those who have served in the armed forces.
On Tuesday, April 25, hundreds of thousands of Australians will rise before the sun to pay their respects at Dawn Services across the nation, and then bear witness as parades, marches and other ceremonies take place in almost every community.

Australians commemorated the first Anzac Day on April 15, 1916, which was 12 months after the landings on Gallipoli.
The anniversary has been observed every year since. With few exceptions – when Australians felt threatened by invasion in 1942 and during the Covid pandemic of more recent years – Anzac Day commemorations have always included a Dawn Service and march.
In other respects, the day’s format has varied through decades of war, depression and social change.
