A popular South Burnett councillor, who announced her Mayoral bid at the weekend, has received an overwhelmingly positive response from the community.
Kirstie Schumacher has served the region as a councillor since 2020 and is excited to be in the running to build sustainability, mental health support and local businesses at the 2024 local election.
If Mrs Schumacher is successful in her mayoral bid she will be South Burnett’s, or the pre-amalgamated councils of Murgon, Wondai, Kingaroy and Nanango’s, first female mayor.
The Blackbutt born and raised mother of two currently holds the portfolio of regional development, as well as representing division four, but says there is much more work to be done.
“It is clear to me that our community cares about the wellbeing of our people and the social and financial sustainability of our region,” Mrs Schumacher said.
“Every day I meet hardworking people who are proud to call the South Burnett home, and yet at the same time they are facing greater challenges than ever before.
“The cost of living, housing crisis, lack of water security, decarbonisation and struggles to retain a skilled workforce are some of the battles we are facing daily,” she said.
Mrs Schumacher pledged her mission to improve the region’s historic challenges around mental health, access to services and helping young people to see a future in the South Burnett.
Mrs Schumacher has proved to be a community team player, spending time with the region’s children, grandparents, farmers, new residents, long-time locals and small business owners who are the “backbone of our towns and villages”.
“I’ve learned they share the same concerns that I do, and they too can see that we have the potential to create an incredible story here in the South Burnett,” Mrs Schumacher said.
