Authorities are investigating after a 12-year-old girl jumped about 2m to escape the “tallest travelling free-fall ride” when her seat belt came undone during takeoff at the Kilcoy Show.
Holly Brown was left traumatised and with a broken foot after she leapt from the Mega Drop on Saturday onto a steel platform, believing she would die if she stayed on the ride.
The Mega Drop is a Sunshine Coast family owned business – P & C Amusements – and climbs about 30m before dropping to the ground at 200km/h.
A Workplace Health and Safety Queensland spokesman said it was currently investigating the incident and confirmed the ride was not in operation.
“WHSQ inspectors and engineers attended the scene,” a spokesman said.
“With this being an active investigation, WHSQ is unable to provide further information at this time,” he said.

Holly told Channel 9 in an interview after the incident that she knew something was wrong as soon as she got on the Mega Drop as she had ridden it earlier that day without any problems.

She said after the belt became unbuckled, she tried to reach it as it swung above her head, before the ride controller shouted to her and her friend to jump off.
“So I thought, ‘Well, I either jump and maybe I break a few bones or I go up and die.’ So I was like, ’You know what, breaking bones is better than losing my life,” Holly said.
Witness Danielle Snow told Channel 9 Holly jumped 6-7m from the ride while her friend Ava was still on it, going up.
“Ava, who was now unbuckled and alone, travelled up the tower a little higher before the attendant hit an emergency stop button to halt the ride,” Ms Snow said.
Holly suffered a lateral malleolus fracture in her right foot and will undergo more scans with an orthopaedic specialist to see if any further damage has been done.
Witnesses have reported a P & C Amusements staff member was in attendance and overseeing operations at the Mega Drop throughout the day.
Holly’s mum Katie Sanzo immediately travelled to Kilcoy from Victoria when she received word of the accident, Channel 9 reported.
The Kilcoy Show and P & C Amusements were contacted for comment.
Miss Sanzo declined to comment.
