Police have confirmed a house fire that tore through a Cherbourg house overnight is being treated as suspicious.

Several fire crews were called the Broadway St blaze in the early hours of Tuesday morning, with the fire fully engulfing the property by 2.30am.

The fire was brought under control by about 4.30am, but the timber house had already been destroyed by the flames.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said the fire was currently being treated as suspicious and investigations into its cause were ongoing.

It is understood no one was living in the building at the time.

A fire investigator returned to the scene later Tuesday morning.

Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council posted a warning to nearby residents on Facebook on Tuesday, warning the community to steer clear of the charred building.

The post said an asbestos test would be conducted before the house was demolished as soon as possible.
