Burnett town cut off and showground evacuated during overnight rainfall

Large parts of the Burnett region experienced torrential rain on Monday night, with some reports of 130mm in two hours and totals exceeding 207mm overnight.

Large parts of the Burnett region experienced heavy rainfall Monday night with more expected throughout the day as residents reported up to 207mm.

Campers at the Goomeri Showgrounds had to be evacuated as the water rose, and the town was reportedly cut off by flash flooding.

Flash flooding was also reported around Kingaroy with lanes blocked in both directions on Kingaroy Barkers Creek Road along with the Bunya Highway in Wondai and the Burnett Hwy in Goomeri.

Several more roads closed in Kilkivan, Goomeri, Cinnabar and surrounding areas due to minor flooding.

Goomeri resident Chris Heness reported 130mm of rain over a two hour period and said the Nangur Creek could break its banks.

Kilkivan resident Matt Cent said his rain gauge topped out at 150mm located behind the school.

Deb Wilson reported her gauge topping out at 180mm on Bligh St and David Timperley reported 190mm on Bridge St.

Stacey Daniels reported the highest reading so far at Cinnabar with 207mm.

On Monday night the Cherbourg council released an emergency alert for the South Burnett and Cherbourg council areas.

“There is a very dangerous severe thunderstorm warning current for the South Burnett and Cherbourg Council areas.

“Intense rainfall will lead to flash flooding.

“Do not drive unless it is necessary and do not enter floodwater.

“Remember, if it’s flooded, forget it,” the alert said.
