Qld flooding emergency: Residents urged to remain vigilant as St George lashed by more than 100mm rain overnight

Residents across the Maranoa and Balonne council areas are being warning to exercise caution, with wild weather battering parts of the region overnight and rain expected to continue into Friday. LATEST UPDATES AND ROAD CLOSURES:

Flood warnings in place for South East Queensland

A flooding emergency is again sweeping across southern Queensland, with parts of the Maranoa and Balonne council areas smashed with more than 100mm.

BOM meteorologist Helen Reid said while Roma and surrounding towns only picked up between 40 and 60mm rain overnight, the majority of heavy rainfall lashed St George and Flinton further south.

“Most of the rainfall was further south of Roma, with St George picking up a lot overnight,” Ms Reid said.

“Roma itself only picked up 46mm since 9am on Thursday, but St George received 114mm.”

With the stubborn trough travelling east into the Western Downs on Friday the wet weather is expected to ease, however there is still a possibility of thunderstorms.

Flinton received a whooping 142mm overnight since 9am Thursday, while 64mm fell on Mitchell, 67mm at Woodlands, and just 26mm at Surat.

The latest reading from BOM indicates minor flooding along the Balonne River downstream of Beardmore Dam.

The Balonne River at St George is likely to remain below the minor flood level of 6m during Friday and Saturday, while the stretch of river at Surat may reach the minor flood level during Saturday.

Higher levels are likely later in the weekend and into next week.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says the current weather event will continue beyond the next 24 hours across the state and asked residents who live in areas of rising creeks and rivers to “be prepared”.

“This rainfall is not like what we saw in the previous event, this rainfall is a bit more sporadic,” she said.

“We are still seeing cases of rivers rising and flooding in particular areas.”

Ms Palaszczuk said 300 properties have been affected by floodwaters so far, however the Brisbane River is not expected to rise about moderate flood level.

The Maranoa Regional Council have urged residents to remain vigilant while travelling on the region’s road network over the coming days.
