Jamie Phillip Hasted pleads guilty in Roma Magistrates Court to drug driving

A truck driver told police his drink had been spiked after he was stopped while taking his sister to hospital. Here’s what happened.

Australia's growing drug crisis

Following last year’s Roma Cup celebrations a drug driver told police he had been spiked and was driving because he needed to take his sister to hospital.

Jamie Phillip Hasted pleaded guilty in Roma Magistrates Court to drug driving.

During police patrols on November 19, 2022 Hasted was stopped on Northern Rd for a roadside drug test at 7.40pm.

Hasted was taken to the Roma Police Station following a positive result, the court was told.

“He denied consuming any illicit drugs but claimed drinks were being spiked at the Club Hotel,” police prosecutions said.

“He said he was travelling to his sister’s address to pick her up and take her to hospital.”

Police prosecutions said it was concerning that Hasted has some “history from five or six years ago”.

Magistrate Shane Elliott said he understood how Hasted could have unknowingly ingested illegal drugs, he needed to be careful and ensure he didn’t drive if that was the case.

“You do have some history for this type of offending, and I know you said you were spiked, but you need to be careful,” he said.

Hasted was fined $600 referred to SPER and disqualified from driving for six months. He was granted a work licence so he could continue driving trucks.
