INITIAL, 5AM: Sirens woke residents across several Rockhampton suburbs after 3am Monday as emergency services rushed to the scene of a massive house fire.
The house was located on the northern corner of Albert Street and Murray Street, directly opposite the entrance to Browne Park, which was experiencing an entirely different kind of drama the weekend just gone.
Multiple crews battled the blaze with a jet of water from a crane.
The building was quickly consumed by the fire which threatened the residences on all sides around it.
The fireball lit up the night sky from the top of the range at Agnes Street down the river; dozens of locals walked out into the street to observe the fire brigades at work.
The police held people back from the corner as rumours circulated there was an open gas line leading to the house.
More to come.
