Scott Peters has described The Cathedral College girls’ Confraternity Shield win as “nothing short of awesome”.

And the victorious coach has revealed the added incentive that helped fuel the team’s success at the prestigious rugby league competition which this year was played in Brisbane.

“I told the girls on Sunday night (before the carnival started) that if we won the comp, they could shave my beard off - and they kept me to it,” Peters said.

“They did it pretty much straight after the game. I showed them the clippers before we left, I had them in my bag, and they all took turns in taking a piece off.”

Peters had sported his moustache and goatee for about three years but was happy to lose it after the team’s historic win.

TCC joined Confro 30 years ago and forged a strong reputation in the boys’ competition, including two grand final appearances, without claiming the Shield.

The girls competition was introduced in 2020 but was cancelled that year due to Covid and cut short by the pandemic the following year.

Marymount College won last year and were the first team TCC beat in their run to the 2023 title.

Peters is incredibly proud of his players, who he said had put the hard yards in.

He said the dramatic grand final against St Patrick’s College Mackay was a true test of their character - and they passed with flying colours.

TCC were leading 10-nil before their star lock Harmonie Fauid broke her leg early in the second half.

The game was quickly moved to another field where St Patrick’s managed to level the scores.

Mackayla Oakley broke the deadlock, scoring the match-winner with seven minutes to go, the final scoreline 14-10.

When the final hooter sounded, the TCC girls got around the injured Fauid and were joined by their male counterparts to sing the team song.

Fauid was hospitalised in Brisbane for a night before returning to Rockhampton, where she underwent surgery to have plates inserted in her broken tibia and fibula.

She was selected in the Confraternity girls honorary team, alongside teammates Zoe Robson (fullback), Player of the Carnival Caitlin Tanner (halfback) and Shayla Powell (utility).

Peters was named coach of the honorary team.

He said the significance of the win was not lost on his players, and it was just reward for all their hard work.

“We had some girls who were new to the game and some girls who were more experienced,” he said.

“Our defence over the whole carnival won us every game and I think that proved in the grand final. They were proper solid in defence.

“Right across the park, we had girls who just wanted to have a go.

“I would like to thank all our sponsors and all my staff because without them we wouldn’t have been able to do what we did.”
