Teenager Reuben Gordon has the Rocky Rugby League fraternity abuzz after a brilliant scoring blitz at the weekend.

The Rockhampton Brothers under-19 winger racked up 30 points, just shy of half his team’s tally in its 62-point demolition of Fitzroy/Gracemere on Saturday.

He crossed five times and landed five conversions, three of them off his own tries.

Gordon’s performance eclipsed a couple of other impressive individual scoring efforts from his clubmates.

A-grade winger Toby Bateman ran in four tries, while teammate Dylan Shadlow landed nine conversions in a comprehensive 80-6 win, also against Fitzroy/Gracemere.

It was a case of the Fish dining out on the Sharks in Round 4 fixtures, with Brothers’ four senior teams - A-grade men and women, reserve grade and under-19 - putting on a collective total of 200 points and conceding just 10 in their four victories.

Under-19 coach Damian Chapman said the 30-point haul was an impressive feat from Gordon, who was part of the CQ Capras under-19 squad this year.

“It’s pretty rare. I can’t think of another one off the top of my head,” he said.

“He’s a good young fella, quiet and unassuming.

“He’s a coach’s dream really; he’s easy to coach, eager to learn and he takes instruction well.

“He can probably play a number of positions but at the moment we’ve got him on the wing - and he’s kicking the goals for us too.”

Gordon hails from Tannum Sands and is a boarder at The Cathedral College.

His achievement had club members reminiscing about other notable scorers from under-19 teams past.

One who came to mind was Luke Bragg, who reportedly scored at least three tries and kicked more than a dozen goals when Brothers decimated Valleys 102-nil in the early 2000s.

Gordon is currently the competition’s leading try-scorer with seven and top points scorer with 38.

He will be integral to the chances of the new-look Brothers outfit playing finals footy again this year.

Chapman said the team had versatility and depth across the park.

“We’ve got a lot of good kids who want to play footy and want to improve,” he said.

“We’ve got some speed and size and we just want to play good footy and put in a strong performance every week.”
