Police charge two men after two Berserker shootings in a fortnight

Two men have been charged with serious offences after they were allegedly involved in shootings in a quiet Central Qld street.

Two men have been charged after they were allegedly involved in two shootings in a quiet Rockhampton street within a fortnight.

Emergency services were called to a shooting on Peter St on February 21 and a man was shot in a home on the street on March 5.

Police raided three properties in Koongal on March 6, resulting in two men were taken into custody.
A 22-year-old Koongal man has been charged with one count each of attempted murder and acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm.

A second 22-year-old Koongal man has been charged with one count of acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm.

Both are due to appear before Rockhampton Magistrates Court today, March 7.

Police will allege the men are known to the 41-year-old man and 40-year-old man who received gunshot wounds in the shootings.
The 41-year-old suffered a leg injury inside the Peter St home and the 40-year-old suffered an arm injury two weeks earlier outside the house, on the street.

On Thursday March 6, Rockhampton Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) Officer in Charge Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Kevin Mawdsley alleged there appeared to have been a “fall-out” between the men.

However, he said the motivations for the alleged shooters was not clear.

He said they were all known to each other.

The man injured on March 5 has been discharged from Rockhampton Hospital after he was shot in the leg.
Police were still present at the scene early in the morning on March 6.

“We have prioritised both of those incidents and Rockhampton CIB has the lead in both of those investigations, Det Act Snr Sgt Mawdsley said.

He alleged both shootings were linked.

Police were still present at the scene early in the morning on March 6, but had left as of March 7.

The man injured on February 21 have received reconstructive surgery in Brisbane, Det Act Snr Sgt Mawdsley said.

Det Act Snr Sgt Mawdsley said police believed there was no risk to the community in general.

“The investigation is a number one priority for the Rockhampton CIB,” he said.

“These types of incidents are rare.

“There’s been some sort of fall out between people in this community.”

Det Act Snr Sgt Mawdsley said there are people in the community who know more and encouraged them to come forward with information.

On March 5, Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said police were called to the March 5 Peter Street incident at 12.30pm after receiving reports of shots being fired.

“A man has sustained minor injuries and a crime scene has been declared at 12.55pm,” she said.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said a man was taken to Rockhampton Hospital in a stable condition with a leg injury.

Emergency services were called about 7.30pm on February 21 after reports gunshots were heard on Peter St and police blocked Peter St off at Water St behind the Kalka Hotel, and declared a crime scene.

Just after 7.35pm, a man attended Rockhampton Hospital with a gunshot wound.

On Saturday, a Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said it was believe those involved in the incident were known to each other and there was no ongoing threat to the public.

The police spokeswoman also said the police investigations included a review of CCTV footage.
