Michael Namok’s dreadlocks have been a big part of his identity for the past 14 years, but soon he’ll be rocking a new hair do in the name of charity.
Next month Mr Namok, who works as a mobile employment consultant, will be shaving his dreadlocks for the Leukaemia Foundation’s annual World’s Greatest Shave fund-raiser.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the World’s Greatest Shave campaign, which was formerly known as Shave for a Cure.
Each year thousands of Aussies raise millions for the campaign.
The money goes towards critical blood cancer research.
It will be the first time Mr Namok’s two kids have seen their dad without his familiar locks.
“I’ve been thinking about doing it for a while now and I’ve finally committed to doing it,” he said.
“The dreads have been a big part of my identity, but I’m ready for a change and the best way to do that is to cut them all off and start again.”
Mr Namok is hoping to raise $5000 during his campaign and has raised just over $650 in the first few weeks alone.
He said he wanted to raise money for the cause so he could help people.
“Being in the industry I’m in I like to be of service and help people and if I can do one small part of something bigger I’m quite happy to be part of that,” he said.
“I feel a little bit nervous, but it’s more about the excitement and the change.
“I’m working on plan for fund-raising.”
Mr Namok will undergo the big shave on March 24.
