Emmaus College has inched out a gutsy 16-8 win to kick start their 2022 Dolphins Cup campaign.

In a battle of two of Central Queensland’s emerging rugby league nurseries, it was Emmaus who showed enough courage to stop Rockhampton Grammar School in their tracks.

The Rockhampton school were quick out of the blocks and had set-up a convincing 12-4 lead at halftime, but struggled to put the game away in the second half.

Rockhampton Grammar fought their way back into the fiery clash and had sustained pressure on the Emmaus line, but a second-half send off proved costly for the visitors.

The win gives Emmaus crucial points in the race to be crowned inaugural Dolphins Cup champions ahead of a tough second-round match up against last year’s Aaron Payne Cup champions St Brendan’s Yeppoon.

Rockhampton Grammar will look to regroup as they prepare to face Bundaberg’s Shalom College next week.

Shalom were due to play competition newcomers Bundaberg State High on Wednesday, but the clash was postponed due to a Covid outbreak in the region.
