St Brendan’s skipper Owen Pattie kicks field goal to win Aaron Payne Cup

Coach Scott Minto ecstatic after win over Kirwan: ‘This is something we all can savour forever.’

Captain Owen Pattie kicked a long-range field goal in the dying seconds of a seesawing grand final to win the Aaron Payne Cup for St Brendan’s College.

Pattie flushed the high-pressure kick from 45m out to secure a 19-18 win against competition heavyweights Kirwan State High in Mackay on Wednesday.

That put the exclamation mark on an outstanding performance from the halfback, who finished with a personal tally of 11 points after he also scored a try and landed three conversions.

The team’s other try scorers were winger Kongasau Nona and fullback Matthew Hill.

St Brendan’s went down by just two in the Cowboys Challenge final against Mercy College Mackay.

First XIII coach Scott Minto was ecstatic about his team’s thrilling victory.

“That was unbelievable. It’s probably one of the best games I’ve ever witnessed in person,” he said.

“It’s was tough, really tough but the boys competed the whole time. There’s some real resilience in this group.

“It’s right up there with one of the best footy feelings I’ve had.

“This is something we all can savour forever.”

The teams both scored two tries to go to the break level at 12-all.

St Brendan’s got their noses in front in the second to lead 18-12 before Kirwan squared the ledger.

With just over one minute on the clock, St Brendan’s started their advance down to the field to put Pattie in position for the match-winning play.

Minto said all of his players were outstanding, but he gave a special nod to man of the match Pattie.

St Brendan’s now advance to the Queensland final on Wednesday, September 15.
