A police investigation is underway after authorities received a complaint about alleged indecent treatment of a student at a Rockhampton school.

Police are investigating an alleged incident involving two students at a Rockhampton school.

On Friday, a Queensland Police Service spokesperson confirmed the Rockhampton Child Protection Investigation Unit was investigating a complaint of indecent treatment of a child which allegedly happened on August 24.

The incident is alleged to have occurred at Heights College, in the North Rockhampton suburb of Kawana.

The QPS spokesperson said police were providing support to the complainant child and their family.

“Investigations are ongoing. No further information is available at this time,” the QPS spokesperson said.

Due to strict laws around protecting children involved in crimes of a sexual nature, police are not able to reveal further details of the alleged incident.

After being contacted by this publication on Friday, Heights College principal Karen Bredenhann released the following statement.

“Heights College is a caring community and the safety of every child is our most important priority,” Ms Bredenhann said.

“We are deeply concerned by allegations about a recent incident between two similarly aged students.

“We have conducted an internal investigation into the incident, and are supporting the students who were involved and their families.

“The College is providing its support to the investigation that is being carried out by the Queensland Police Service.

“While this process is underway, it would not be appropriate for the College to make any further comment.”

Heights College is a Christian school offering education from kindergarten to year 12.

Under the criminal code, the indecent treatment of a child refers to a child under 16.

According to this code, indecent treatment is a “range of conduct of a sexual nature” including fondling a child in a sexual manner, having the child touch a sexual body part or taking a sexual photograph of a child.

Police advised no further information was available at this time.
