A young Central Queensland carny has found himself behind bars after he punched a co-worker and knocked him unconscious and physically assaulted his ex-partner and her mother.

Tyler Anthony Corbin, 19, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on November 21, 2022 to 23 charges, including seven counts of breaching bail conditions, three counts of contravening a domestic violence order, two counts of assaults occasioning bodily harm – domestic violence offence, and one count each of assaults occasioning bodily harm, stealing and wilful damage – domestic violence offence.

Police prosecutor Mirren Smith said Corbin, who worked as a travelling carnival employee, was heading to Rockhampton from Bundaberg with work colleagues when the trailer disconnected from the vehicle about 1.13am on September 18, 2022.

Another work colleague was called out to help recover the trailer, which was stuck in a ditch along Rosedale Road at Watalgan.

When the man asked Corbin for a nearby implement, Corbin got angry and screamed at him, demanding to know why he hadn’t picked it up when he walked past and that he should do it himself.

The man asked Corbin whether he wanted to go home or not, which led to Corbin storming up and punching him in the face.

Ms Smith said the punch caused the man to fall back and strike his head on the ground, knocking him unconscious.

She said Corbin stated that he shouldn’t have “pissed him off”.

The man regained consciousness a short time later and suffered abrasions and a lingering pain in his jaw.

Ms Smith said Corbin stayed at his ex-partner’s house in Moura for about four days over Christmas 2021, despite there being a domestic violence order in place prohibiting him from being there.

She said while at the house on December 27, 2021 Corbin physically assaulted both his ex-partner and her mother by punching them both in the face and damaged the house by punching holes in doors and walls.

Corbin’s attack on his ex-partner caused her to fall backwards over a couch and lose consciousness.

The punch caused bruising and swelling to the left side of her face and left her experiencing pain in her face and the top of her head.

She was transported to Moura Hospital, however, due to the severity of her injuries, was transported to Rockhampton Hospital.

Corbin’s attack on his ex-partner’s mother caused pain, cuts, bruising and swelling to her face.

Ms Smith said Corbin then went to the Puma in Moura and stole a can of Red Bull before being picked up by police while walking along the Dawson Highway.

She said Corbin told police he was picked up before Christmas and driven to his ex-partner’s house in Moura to spend time with their child and became enraged when the victims got in his face and wouldn’t let him calm down.

She said Corbin stated he figured he was already in trouble and might as well steal a drink from the Puma service station.

Corbin had also breached bail conditions numerous times between May and June 2022.

Defence lawyer David Mills said this was the first time his client had found himself in a custodial situation.

“The matters before the court outline some anger management issues that he needs to address,” Mr Mills said.

“He is desirous of putting this behind him and get the support he needs for the future.”

Magistrate Cameron Press said Corbin needed to address his behaviour and anger management.

“If you don’t, I fear it won’t be long before something ticks you off again and you are punching someone else and who knows what might happen next time,” Mr Press said.

“You cannot continue to go around punching people in the face because you can’t get your own way.

“Your behaviour here is childish. You need to grow up.”

Corbin was sentenced to 12 months’ prison with parole release on January 18, 2023 and 64 days pre-sentence custody declared as time served.
