A Capricorn Coast teenage driver has been told to do something about her speeding as her traffic record continues to grow.

Lauren Eve Cooper, 19, pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on January 27 to driving while demerit point disqualified.

The court heard that Cooper was caught driving on Fountain Street at Emu Park on the afternoon of January 4.

The police prosecution said when officers asked Cooper why she was driving, she said she “had no reason” and that “it was stupid”.

The prosecution tendered Cooper’s traffic history which included numerous speeding offences.

Solicitor Krissy Cummins said Cooper worked part-time at Hungry Jacks and she lived with her mother who was in court to support her.

Before handing down penalty, Magistrate Jason Schubert noted Cooper’s history clearly showed she had lost all of her points and he addressed that further.

Mr Schubert said that on two different occasions Cooper had been caught speeding more than 20kmh over the speed limit, in 2021 and 2020.

“And then another speeding in June 2020,” he said.

Mr Schubert fined Cooper $450 and disqualified her from driving for six months.

He then offered her some parting advice.

“If you drive under a court disqualification, what happens is, you will then get a two-year mandatory disqualification.

“And you also face the risk of going to jail for up to 18 months.

“There are many people who are in jail at the moment, who haven’t got criminal histories, but just drove under a court disqualification - that’s how serious that is.

“In saying that, so you have your Mum in the back of the court.

“Because your Mum’s going to make sure you don’t drive at all.

“When you do get your licence (back), do something about your speeding.”
