A court has heard the shocking details of how a woman was unable to breathe while her partner strangled her after pushing her onto a bed during an argument over cleaning a car.

Shannon Robert Weeks, 32, was arguing with his partner at their Depot Hill home in October 2022 before unleashing into a “quite brazen” attack on her.

Weeks pleaded guilty in Rockhampton District Court on Thursday (June 22) to two counts of common assault - domestic violence offence and strangulation.

The court heard during the argument Weeks’ partner told him to act his age before he got “enraged” and threatened her by saying “do you want me to punch you in the face? Do you want me to kill you?”.

As the argument continued Weeks pushed his partner onto the bed and put his hand around her throat for about 10 seconds, she was unable to speak but could still breathe.

When the victim tried to get away Weeks grabbed her again and shoved her onto the bed, this time grabbing her throat with both hands and squeezing between 10 and 30 seconds.

The victim was unable to breathe and her housemate came into the room and tried to intervene.

Weeks turned to the housemate and called her a “piece of s--t” before she called police.

He then grabbed his partner and bit her face.

Weeks then went to hit his partner’s housemate with a dining room chair and grabbed his partner again, before the housemate hit him with golf club to defend herself and Weeks’ partner.

Weeks then went outside and laid down until police arrived.

Crown prosecutor Luke Smoothy told the court Weeks had a six page criminal history which included offences of violence.

Weeks’ barrister William Prizeman told the court his client came from a disadvantaged background.

Mr Prizeman told the court Weeks had been unable to work as was diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was a teenager.

He said upon his release from prison Weeks planned to move to Maryborough to live with his parents.

Judge Jeff Clarke took into account Weeks’ plea of guilty when considering his sentence.

Weeks was sentenced to three years imprisonment with 239 days of presentence custody declared as time already served.

He will be released on parole on July 26.
