A Central Queensland man has allegedly struck a woman to the back of the head with a mug, causing an open laceration.

A Central Queensland man has allegedly struck a woman to the back of the head with a mug, causing an open laceration.

Ryan Lawrence Oliver Leisha, 36, applied for bail in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on May 25.

Mr Leisha was charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, which allegedly occurred on December 1, 2022 in Woorabinda.

Police prosecutor Courtney Brown said there was a physical altercation and that a woman was seen reacting to Mr Leisha allegedly striking her to the back of the head with a mug.

“There was blood on the back of her head,” Ms Brown said.

“There was an open laceration.”

Mr Leisha’s solicitor, Samantha Legrady, said the charge was contested.

Ms Legrady said a brief of evidence would need to be requested and that if case conferencing was successful, Mr Leisha may not serve any actual time in custody.

“It could be a number of months before these matters are resolved,” she said.

“He may serve too much time in custody and he may not actually receive any time to be served.”

She said bail conditions could include that Mr Leisha not go to Woorabinda, not consume alcohol and attend the Alcohol and Other Drugs Service.

Ms Brown opposed bail being granted to Mr Leisha, stating that if there were delays, another bail application could be brought before the court at a later time.

“It is a serious example of assault occasioning bodily harm,” she said.

“The defendant could quite easily serve a term of actual time in custody.”

Acting Magistrate Stephen Byrne granted Mr Leisha bail with the conditions that he abide by a curfew, report to police, not contact the alleged victim, not go to Woorabinda, not consume alcohol and attend the Alcohol and Other Drugs Service.

Mr Leisha’s matter was adjourned to July 5 with a brief of evidence ordered.
