A man once jailed for running down someone who stole his brother’s mini motorcycle ordered more than 10gs of cocaine to be delivered by Australia Post to distribute to mate’s at a “weekend of men behaving poorly”.

Shane Matthew McPherson, 33, pleaded guilty on May 18 in the Supreme Court in Rockhampton to one count of possessing more than 50 grams of a dangerous drug, three counts of supplying a dangerous drug, two of possessing steroids, one possessing a phone used in the commission of a drug offence, one of possessing a restricted item, one possessing suspected tainted property, one possessing drug utensils and one of contravening a police order to provide access to electronically stored information.

Crown prosecutor Harriet Hall-Pearce told the court police were notified of suspicious parcels sent via Australia Post.

One parcel which police intercepted on May 11 contained 11.492g of pure cocaine in 55.78g of substance and another intercepted on May 28 contained 8.875g in 27.999g of substance.

They had been addressed to McPherson’s mother’s residence.

Police then intercepted a parcel sent to McPherson’s residence on May 21, containing 82.8gs of steroids.

Police searched McPherson’s residence on May 26, locating drug utensils, a suspected stolen mobile phone, a retractable billy club and baton, vials of testosterone and uncovered a message on McPherson’s phone about him supplying an unknown person with steroids.

Defence barrister Simon Lewis said when the first cocaine parcel didn’t turn up, McPherson made enquiries and was told it had been returned to the sender.

Mr Lewis said McPherson spoke with the supplier who then sent half of the original amount again via Australia Post and an agreement was made that the supplier would send the other half once the original parcel was back in their hands.

He said the drugs were for a buck’s party weekend where there was ‘entertainment’.

“Basically a weekend of men behaving poorly,” Mr Lewis said.

“He didn’t pay for the drugs.

“That was another member of the group.”

He said his client was tasked with sourcing the drugs.

The court heard McPherson had been sent to prison in his early 20s for serious offences, including a five-year prison term after a jury found him guilty of acts intending to cause grievous bodily harm in a Supreme Court trial in Rockhampton in September 2010.

Mr Lewis said McPherson was two months shy of finishing a butcher’s apprenticeship when he was sent to prison for that offence.

He said his client had since turned his life around and had been working in the mines for a long-time, working his way up to being an assessor of machinery.

Mr Lewis said McPherson was married with two children.

He said his client had struggled with low testosterone levels, and a low libido, since his early 20s.

“Even though he has been getting (testosterone) illegally, he was advising his doctors to ensure he was taking it properly,” Mr Lewis said.

He said his client now had a prescription for testosterone.

Justice Peter Davis said McPherson had clearly “overcome” his “initial setbacks in life”, referring to his convictions in 2007 and 2010 which resulted in his incarceration.

Justice Davis ordered McPherson to 18 months prison, wholly suspended and operational for three years.
