A drunk man armed with a hammer and metal bar swung at parked cars and banged on fences during an outburst over his brother’s terminal illness diagnosis, a court has been told.

Rockhampton man Scott Williams carried out a wild tirade, which included an explosive spray toward police, in a residential area near a busy shopping centre.

Williams went on a bender in October 2022, shortly after difficult family conversations about his brother’s prognosis, swinging a metal bar at parked vehicles and banging on fences in Hassell Street, Norman Gardens

Police prosecutor Mirren Smith said when police confronted Williams with the hammer and bar in hand on Moores Creek Road, he told them, “I’m in a c-- of a mood. I’m drunk as a skunk. What the f--k is this, s--t.”
The court was told he also said, “You c--t, want to pull me up, you better back the f--k off because I’m not in the mood for it.”

Williams struggled with police when they tried to place him under arrest, clenching his fists and standing in a fighting stance.

He also tried to walk away from officers, which resulted in a scuffle before Williams was ultimately handcuffed.

Defence lawyer Felicity Davis said her client was the full-time carer for his brother before he died from liver failure.

“The two brothers were very close,” she said.

“His brother has sadly passed away in November.”

Williams also had a used glass pipe, syringe and a clip seal bag in his backpack.

He pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on February 3 to one count of public nuisance and three of possessing drug utensils.

Ms Davis said Williams was not currently working, but had kept himself busy since his brother’s death by helping family friends who have an oyster farm at Stanage Bay, and looking after his teenage daughters.

Magistrate Press placed him on a probation for 10 months, with a condition he attends drug or other counselling as directed.

He was also ordered he complete 50 hours of community service.
