A father busted with 3g of meth has gone to rehab and relocated to Hervey Bay in an effort to beat his drug addiction.

Steven Thomas Wegert pleaded guilty to a number of offences, including three counts of possessing dangerous drugs, and one count of possessing pipes or utensils, when he faced Maryborough Magistrates Court on Monday.

Police prosecutor Balam Selvadurai said Wegert was caught with more than 3g of meth in November 2024, but said the purity would be considerably less than that.

He had also been caught with cannabis, Sgt Selvadurai said.

Defence lawyer Travis George said Wegert was supported in court by his sister, who also submitted a letter to the court.

Wegert had relocated from Rockhampton to Hervey Bay to separate himself from his previous peer group, the court heard.

He had spent two months in a rehab centre in Rockhampton and when he completed the program, had moved to Hervey Bay the same week.

He was living with his sister and working alongside his mother at the Torquay Hotel.

“It was not an easy decision for him to make, your honour, as he does have two children in the Rockhampton area, but he recognised the need to become sober.”

Since moving to Hervey Bay, Wegert had sought support from Bridges and was having regular appointments.

Mr George said Wegert had experienced homelessness since he was a teenager and had used drugs from an early age.

He’d been in prison previously but also had periods of sobriety and had done a lot of work in hospitality, but had fallen “off the wagon, into the depths of addiction”.

But having taken the steps he had taken, Wegert was heavily motivated to keep going the way he was going, Mr George said.

Magistrate John Milburn sentenced Wegert to six months in prison with immediate release on parole.

Convictions were recorded.
