A home in North Rockhampton remains under police guard after two women, aged 81 and 44, were found dead inside on Saturday evening.
Signs on the outside fence suggest those who lived there liked to be left alone, warning: “Private keep out … No trespassing … No admittance and Beware of the dog”.
Wearing protective equipment, two forensic officers could be seen at the Bank Street house about 8am on Sunday, combing the veranda before going inside.
Police have confirmed officers first made the grim discovery after being called to the Park Avenue property to conduct a welfare check about 5.30pm Saturday.
According to a Queensland Police Service spokeswoman, police on Sunday afternoon were still unable to say how the women died or whether anyone else was involved in their deaths.
“It’s not something we’re likely to put out more info on just yet because it’s still so broad,” the QPS spokeswoman said.
Following the initial call on Saturday, a heavy police presence, including criminal investigations branch detectives and officers, descended on the home.
Despite the hive of activity, the normally quiet street remained so on Sunday with just the one marked police vehicle on guard before forensic officers arrived.
The only noise came from rainbow lorikeets in the several bottlebrush trees in the street, where neighbours said residents often fed the birds.
“Yeah very much so a quiet street,” one resident said, describing news of the deaths as “a shock.”
“Not much normally happens around here.”
Asked if there was ever any trouble in the street, the resident said: “Nah, not that I’m aware of anyway.”
The house where the women were found is several properties from the northern bank of the Fitzroy River.
A report will be made to the coroner.
