A young Rockhampton man stole more than $1000 worth of clothes from a major sports store while with another person, prompting an acting magistrate to tell him to “get a job”.

Riley James Cox, 20, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on September 29 to one count each of stealing, unlawful use of motor vehicle, using a vehicle while the number plate attached was granted for another vehicle, and breaching a bail condition.

The court heard Cox stole $1064.90 worth of clothing from Rebel in Rockhampton with another person on May 18.

Defence lawyer David Mills said Cox was supported in court by his mother, who was less than impressed with his offending.

He said it was his client’s mother’s number plate he took and used.

Acting Magistrate Paul Byrne rebuked Cox, telling him to “get a job”.

“Don’t steal from other people,” he said.

Mr Byrne sentenced Cox to four months prison, wholly suspended for 12 months.

Criminal convictions were recorded.
