A drug using child sex offender has been jailed for a series of offences including one incident where he climbed on top of his car, paced while hitting the gutter of a house and yelling incoherently, a court heard.
Vaughan David Morrison, 32, became a reportable sex offender for a five-year period until June 24, 2023, Rockhampton Magistrates Court heard on January 16.
He failed to report a 16-year-old passenger in his Toyota LandCruiser when it was involved in an accident on McCanns Road, Greycliffe, in the Banana Shire region, on September 29, 2022.
Police reviewed the registry in October that year which revealed Morrison had failed to report his contact with the child within the 24-hour obligatory period.
He also had failed to report directly to the Child Protection Offender Registry in May as required under his reporting obligations.
It wasn’t the first time Morrison had failed to comply with his reporting obligations.
In May 2022, he was sentenced in Biloela Magistrates for seven offences of failing to report – that time after he was found secretly living with kids at a Sunshine Coast property and it was noted during that sentencing that he had eight prior convictions for that offending.
He was also sentenced in Biloela Magistrates Court on May 13, 2020, for three failing to comply with reporting conditions charges, and he received three months’ jail with a parole release date of June 13, 2020.
Police prosecutor Claudia Neil-Ballantine told the Rockhampton court Morrison also damaged a Department of Housing property in Biloela on October 21, about 2.45pm when he repeatedly threw a bucket at a laundry room wall, putting a hole in the wall.
Afterwards, Morrison sped out of the property via the backyard in his unregistered and uninsured vehicle.
His driver’s license had been disqualified since June 6, 2023.
“When the defendant drove onto Oakey Street, he had driven in a dangerous manner which caused the vehicle to make unnecessary noise and lose traction on the road in a built up suburban area which caused the vehicle to swerve on the road and leave skid marks from the residence to halfway up Oakey Street,” Ms Neill-Ballantine said.
She said Morrison drove to his mother’s house where he was located by police 15 minutes later showing symptoms of being under the influence of an unknown drug.
“He continued to raise his voice and yell incoherently before climbing on the roof of his car while banging on the gutter of the house,” Ms Neil-Ballantine said.
Morrison also had a barbecue fork in his hand.
He was arrested and placed in a police car pod and while being transported to the watch-house, he repeatedly kicked the pod door, causing it to crack.
Morrison pleaded guilty to two counts of failing to comply with reporting obligations, along with one count each of wilful damage, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle while adversely affected by an intoxicating substance with two prior drug driving convictions, disqualified driving, making unnecessary noise or smoke, driving an unregistered vehicle, driving an uninsured vehicle, wilful damage of a police vehicle and a breach of bail.
He was sentenced to 12 months prison with 67 days presentence custody declared as time served and parole release on February 21, 2025.
Morrison was also disqualified from driving for four years.
