Police launch homicide investigation in Emerald

Police have released an 18-year-old man from custody without charge after questioning him for two days over the death of Emerald man Kenneth Geary.

Mr Geary, 58, was found dead inside an Emerald home on Friday night.

Emergency services were called to a Loch Street home on March 10 about 11pm to reports of an altercation.

According to Queensland Ambulance Service, paramedics assessed a man in his 50s with critical injuries following an alleged assault, however, he died at the scene.

The property was declared a crime scene, with an investigation launched into the circumstances of Mr Geary’s death, which is continuing to be treated as suspicious.

On Monday, Capricornia District Detective Acting Inspector Luke Peachey said police had taken an 18-year-old man into custody, however, had since released him without charge.

“We want to conduct a few further investigations,” Detective Acting Inspector Peachey said.

“It’s still a very active investigation.

“We are treating the death as suspicious.

“But at this stage we felt the best way forward was to release that person while we make some further investigations.”

He said the 18-year-old man and the deceased were known to each other.

“The investigation is ongoing, however, at this stage there is no evidence of any other person being involved in the incident other than the victim and one other person,” he said.

He said the Loch Street address was not the deceased’s home address and that there was no evidence to suggest any weapons were involved in the alleged altercation at this stage.

“There will be further things happening today,” he said.

“We are waiting for the results of the post mortem.

“Once we get those results we are hoping we can progress this matter further.

“If anyone was around that area between 11pm and 12am last night who may have dashcam footage or CCTV footage they think may be able to assist police, if they can contact Crime Stoppers or Emerald detectives.”
