Weapons, drug charges at Waterford

A Rockhampton mother of six was busted with a large sandwich bag of methamphetamine down her underwear after police found a small amount of the drug in her pants pocket.

Kristy Lee Iles, 35, pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court at Rockhampton on July 26 to one count each of possessing a dangerous drug in excess of two grams, possessing property suspected of having been used in connection with the commission of a drug offence and driving without a licence.

The court heard police came across two cars that were parked side-by-side just before midnight on May 23, 2020, and that Iles was the driver of one of the vehicles.

Crown prosecutor Tiffany Lawrence said police searched Iles, who declared she had half a point of meth in her pants pocket, which was found.

Ms Lawrence said police asked Iles if there was anything down her pants and that she denied having any other drugs.

However, police found a large sandwich bag containing meth and a straw spoon inside the front of her underwear.

Police also found a clip-seal bag of meth inside Iles’ handbag.

Ms Lawrence said police found a total of 3.913g of pure meth in 5.799g of substance.

She said checks revealed Iles’ did not have a driver’s licence at the time and that it had expired on November 13, 2019.

She said the Crown did not allege a commercial purpose to Iles’ possession of the meth and accepted it was for her personal use.

Defence barrister Sheridan Shaw said her client, who was the mother of six children, had only started using meth when she was 28 years old.

“Her partner at the time brought it into their lives,” Ms Shaw said.

“That is what sent her down this spiral that has led to the offending before the court today.

“She admits she is still struggling with her drug addiction and she has expressed a willingness to participate in rehabilitation.

“She is really quite interested in finally getting her life together.

“She feels she has now hit rock bottom.”

Chief Justice Helen Bowskill sentenced Iles to 18 months’ prison with immediate parole.

Iles was also disqualified from driving for one month.

The drug paraphernalia was forfeited to the Crown.
