A young man jailed for the infamous Rockhampton Australia Post distribution centre parcel heist in February this year had been racking up break and enters since turning 18, starting with an armed robbery outside a bottleshop.

Jai Taylor White, 20, and his juvenile co-offender, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, were sentenced in Rockhampton District Court this week for the armed robbery, with White also sentenced for two attempted armed robbery in company offences and three burglaries.

The bad blood between two young men jailed for armed robbery was evident in court, with the pair separated in the dock by two prison guards.

Judge William Everson said the incident was captured on CCTV and when police caught up with White, he named his co-offender.

“Maybe that’s why you have two officers sitting between you,” he commented.

The pair, armed with knives, approached a group of men outside a bottleshop in Brisbane on May 18, 2021, with the juvenile taking off with the victim’s 10 pack of Bundaberg rum premix drinks and White staying to demand the men hand over their wallets and phones.

White left empty-handed, but 18 months later he stole $2000 electrical property which was never recovered, after smashing his way into a business in Hollingsworth Street, Kawana, in December 2022.

He also attempted to break into a Mitsubishi vehicle parked at Kershaw Gardens as the owner spent an hour in the popular park exercising on January 21, damaging the driver’s door.

Weeks later, White and others broke into Capricorn Rewind Electrical premises on Knight Street, Park Avenue, and stole several thousands of dollars of electrical hand tools on February 6, 2023.

The extent of White’s involvement in the Australia Post parcel heist is unknown as investigators have not been able quantify how much was stolen from the distribution centre on February 25, 2023.

Jason Robert Beattie, 47, was sentenced in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on March 24 for his role in the parcel heist and other offending.

Beattie was sentenced to 2.5 years prison with parole eligibility on January 24, 2024, and disqualified him from driving for two years for each of the two disqualified driving offences.

Convictions were recorded.

Rockhampton District Court heard White started using marijuana when he was 11-years-old, then moved onto using methamphetamines.

He has no employment history.

Judge Everson told him “you need to improve your level of education and change your anti-social approach to life”.

White pleaded guilty to all of his charges and was sentenced to three years prison with 244 days presentence custody declared as time already served with parole release on March 8, 2024.

His co-accused pleaded guilty to the one charge of armed robbery in company and was sentenced to 288 days prison with 288 days presentence custody declared as time served.
