He was known by many things during his life, now he will be forever memorialised at a place where he envisioned Rockhampton’s future.
Green thumb former Rockhampton Regional Council deputy mayor and councillor Neil Fisher will be forever remembered after a walking track was named in his honour at Mount Archer.
The Neil Fisher Memorial Walk starts at the base of Mount Archer and leads up to The Saddle where a memorial plaque and bench has been installed.
Cr Fisher, who passed away in July 2024, was a driving force behind the Mount Archer Activation Master Plan.
His vision helped shape the mountain into a space that celebrates both nature and community.
Cr Fisher’s wife Sherie said, “Neil loved Mount Archer so much”.
“He could see so much potential there,” he said.
The former Rockhampton Deputy Mayor, who died in July last year, was awarded a posthumous Medal of the Order of Australia for service to local government and to the community of Rockhampton.
Cr Fisher served the Rockhampton region for over 20 years, including as Deputy Mayor from 2020 to 2024.
Mayor Tony Williams said the Memorial Walk is a fitting tribute to a man who was deeply committed to the people and places of the region.
The newly unveiled sign at the Saddle offers a quiet place for reflection and remembrance, providing loved ones and community members a space to honour Neil’s memory.
It stands as a symbol of his unwavering commitment to improving the region’s environment and recreational spaces.
Cr Fisher’s legacy includes his advocacy for the Rockhampton Airport, his leadership in environmental initiatives, and his role in establishing walking tracks and enhancing the biodiversity of local waterways.
He was known for his dedication to infrastructure, the environment, and key services like waste, water, and the airport.
Cr Fisher’s family will accept his OAM at Government House in Brisbane in September.
Beyond council, Cr Fisher was a devoted husband, father of four, and a passionate contributor to his family’s nursery business for over 45 years.
Mayor Tony Williams said Neil was more than a councillor, he was a friend, a mentor, and a tireless champion for our community.
“Neil’s fingerprints are all over this mountain - from the walking tracks to the environmental initiatives he championed,” Cr Williams said
“He had a deep love for our natural environment, and it’s only fitting that we honour him with a walk through one of the places he held dear.
“This walk is a place where we can feel his presence and remember the difference he made.”
