Central Qld dad groomed his underage stepdaughter for sex

A Central Queensland father who groomed his 13-year-old stepdaughter for sex has been sentenced for his “completely disgusting” crimes. *Distressing content.*

A dad who sent sexually explicit videos of himself to his underage stepdaughter and asked her to have sex with him, has been sentenced for his “completely disgusting” crimes.

The man in his 30s, who by law cannot be named, appeared in custody in the District Court in Rockhampton this week, where he pleaded guilty to three counts of grooming a child under 16 (domestic violence offences), and one count each of using electronic communication to procure a child under 16 (DV offence) and possessing child exploitation material (CEM).

Judge Jeff Clarke described the man’s offending against his 13-year-old stepdaughter as “completely disgusting.”

The court heard the man had been in a relationship with the girl’s mother for many years and he had “occupied an important position in the young girl’s life.”

It was told the couple had separated when this offending occurred, due to the man’s violence and his threats to harm and kill the woman.

“The complainant was of an impressionable and vulnerable age - she was only 13,” Judge Clarke said.

“She and her mother were clearly alert to the unwanted sexual depravity of a man nearly three times older.

“And her mother had asked her to monitor any messages from you because of your past violence.”

On a night in July, 2023, the man messaged the girl saying “wanna video.”

The girl told her mum and the latter took the phone and started responding to the man, pretending to be her daughter.

The man, believing he was communicating with the young girl, said he wanted to put his “big hard penis inside her wet p---y” and he also referred to her sucking his penis.

The court heard he also sent the girl two videos of himself masturbating, as well as a photo of him masturbating where his face was visible.

He asked the girl to have sex with him and to give him oral sex.

He further asked the girl for photos of her vagina and he also asked her to video call him when she was next in the shower.

The court heard the girl had subsequently experienced heightened anxiety, considerable fear and had to attend counselling.

“She says she is sad and angry, and hates you,” Judge Clarke told the man during sentencing.

In relation to the CEM offence, the court heard that police went to the man’s residence under a warrant, and he claimed ownership of a mobile phone which he said would have child exploitation material on it because he was “f---ed in the head from drugs and s--t.’

The were 28 CEM images on the phone, including a girl aged between eight and 10 being raped by an adult male.

There were also two CEM videos found.

The court heard the man had a criminal history which consisted predominantly of domestic violence offending and included drug offending.

It was told he committed the CEM offence while on a suspended sentence for contravening a domestic violence order.

Defence barrister Sheridan Shaw detailed the man’s drug issues, saying he first used cannabis when he was seven years old, he regularly used it from the age of 12, and by the time he was 27 he had turned to methamphetamine.

She said he had tried rehab on numerous occasions and the last time he was employed was in 2017.

Ms Shaw said the man was the victim of sexual abuse as a child.

Judge Clarke activated the six-month suspended sentence to be served cumulatively, and sentenced the man to 18 months’ jail.

He declared 195 days’ pre-sentence custody as time already served and set parole eligibility at March 15, 2024.
