Coffee machines are being seasoned, food is on the way and the final touches are being made on the gardens and building as the grand opening for Cocobrew Express Yeppoon gets set to open on Sunday, November 26.

It is the third store in the brand, with a drive-thru and restaurant in Rockhampton.

This store is owned by Matthew and Joanne Wex, with Matthew growing up on the Capricorn Coast and always dreaming of working in Yeppoon.

“Yeppoon is growing rapidly, I think there is a market here for another coffee drive-thru,” he said.

He saw the success of the Rockhampton venues and approached developer John Kele from Kele Property Group about opening a drive-thru in Yeppoon.

The building was designed by Rockhampton firm Design+Architecture.

“Subsequent to that, we found the right location, where are we standing at now,” Mr Wex said.

“Over the last two years this project has come to life and we are now at the point where we are opening on Sunday.”

It’s been a full circle moment for Mr Wex, who started his working career in hospitality managing bars before two decades in the media industry.

Speaking to The Morning Bulletin before the grand opening, Mr Wex joked there would be some panic between now and the opening.

“It’s just those final bits and pieces, all the food arrives tomorrow (Friday), so that’s all got to be packed away, we have our kitchen team doing all the prep on Saturday so that on Sunday when people come through, we are good to go and ready,” he said.

“Getting the coffee machines seasoned and up to speed, all that final testing and tweaking.”

There have been 20 staff employed through the new business.

The venue is located on Hoskyn Drive, next to the Capricorn Coast Hospital, near KFC.

The hospital itself doesn’t have a cafe and the news of a food and coffee business opening next door has been music to the worker’s ears.

“So we are providing a much anticipated and wanted service for hospital staff,” Mr Wex said.

“I’ve had a lot of feedback from Queensland Health staff who are really excited about being able to walk two minutes down and grab something to eat and grab a seat.”

Mr Wex said 11,000 cars travel the road from Rockhampton to Yeppoon and he hopes to capture some of that traffic.

“They all pretty much come through this roundabout, so we are hopeful a percentage of them want to have a coffee and something to eat on their way to town,” he said.

Cocobrew Express Yeppoon will be open from 7am on Sunday, November 26.

“I can’t wait to support the local community and provide another outlet for them to get caffeinated,” Mr Wex said.
