Two serious car crashes in fewer than 24 hours prompted Rockhampton police to remind drivers to take care on Central Queensland roads.

A rollover on Razorback Road on Sunday afternoon killed a Bouldercombe woman, and a 77-year-old Biloela man was hospitalised on Monday morning following a head-on collision with a truck on the Capricorn Highway.

Both of those matters are under police investigation.

Superintendent Glen Pointing reminded road users of the Fatal Five behaviours that cause accidents – Distraction, Drink Driving, Speeding, Fatigue and Unrestrained.

“We’re currently sitting at 13 lives lost in the Capricornia police district,” he said, “so that’s up by about three from the same time last year.

“Statewide, I think we’ve lost a total of 171 lives in Queensland this year.

“That’s out of 155 crashes. Forty-three of those are people on motorcycles, five are bicycle riders, and nine were pedestrians.”

Queensland Road Safety Week takes place from August 16 to August 20 this year.

Superintendent Pointing said police would be speaking more about the topic of safety throughout next week.

“They’re always concerning when people lose their lives,” he said.

“Motor vehicles are dangerous things, and it just reinforces the point that road safety is everyone’s business, so every decision you make behind the wheel counts.

“It’s really your responsibility every time you enter onto a road, whether you’re walking or you’re driving a car or riding a motorbike or a bicycle, you’ve really got to take your time and beware of your conditions and what’s going on around you.”
