A beloved great-grandmother has died and her husband is still in hospital with serious injuries after a head-on collision near Rockhampton.

Peter and Dianne Herbener, from Mount Morgan, both sustained life-threatening injuries in a crash on Monday and had been in the intensive care unit at Rockhampton Hospital since.

On Saturday afternoon, police confirmed Dianne had passed away in the early hours of the morning.

Peter, 73, remains in a serious condition at Rockhampton Hospital on Monday, February 26, about 9am.

The couple were on their way to babysit a great-grandchild when the crash occurred.

They were in their Mazda sedan on the Razorback Road near Waynes Lane at Bouldercombe when they collided with the Nissan Navara about 7.20am on February 19.

The driver of the Nissan, Clinton Benjamin Leisha, 36, has since been charged with six offences, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing grievous bodily harm and two counts of driver failing to remain at scene and provide assistance and showing callous disregard for injured persons.

Court documents allege Mr Leisha was “driving aggressively” and had overtaken two vehicles travelling southbound on Razorback Road while three other vehicles were travelling north.

Dianne had been the president of the Mount Morgan Historical Museum for the past six years and Peter is known to have often helped her.

Fellow Mount Morgan Historical Museum co-ordinator and treasurer Gwen Scott said Dianne was a tireless worker who would be greatly missed.

“They (were) a lovely couple... married for 52 years,” Ms Scott said.

“Her husband helped out a lot too and supported her with the work.”

The couple has six children - one daughter and five sons and had moved to Mount Morgan a number of years ago, after working at the sawmill in Dingo.

“They decided Mount Morgan was going to be their home for the rest of their lives,” Ms Scott said, adding everyone in the museum was devastated by what had happened.

“All our prayers go with them on behalf of the staff of the museum,” she said.

Mr Leisha will remain in custody until his next court date on April 3.

He is incarcerated at Capricornia Correctional Centre.
