Denison Street crash: Man dies, three others injured

Police have released more details on what happened in the fatal motorbike and car crash on Denison and Derby Street on Wednesday afternoon.

A serious traffic crash in Rockhampton City on Wednesday claimed the life of 30-year-old Rockhampton father, Duane ‘Deej’ Warcon, and seriously injured another 20-year-old woman.

Initial investigations of the crash indicate Mr Warcon and his female passenger were travelling along Denison Street on a motorbike and a BMW X5 was at the stop sign entering the intersection from Derby Street when the two vehicles collided.

Rockhampton police have confirmed both of the motorbike riders were wearing helmets.

“It’s one of those critical things, it’s just like a seatbelt, if you are going to go on a motorcycle you need to wear a helmet,” Capricornia Police District Acting Superintendent Mark Burgess said.

Rumours spread on social media that the motorbike was stolen however police have confirmed it was not stolen.

Forensic Crash Unit are continuing to investigate the crash and it is not known yet if speed was a factor.

First aid was rendered to Mr Warcon, however he sadly died on scene.

“Those injuries to the rider were serious that he actually passed on from the incident,” Mr Burgess said.

The 20-year-old female passenger of the motorcycle was transported to hospital and remains in a serious condition.

The driver of the BMW, a 43-year-old woman, and her passenger, a 15-year-old boy, were also transported to Rockhampton Hospital with minor injuries.

Both were in a stable condition.

The area was closed to all traffic until just after 5pm when emergency services cleared the scene and investigated the crash.

The city’s railway line runs along Denison Street and all trains were stopped.

Officers from the Forensic Crash Unit are investigating.

This crash comes after a series of other serious crashes in Central Queensland in the space of just two days.

The Capricornia district’s death toll has gone from zero to five in just 48 hours.

Two trucks collided on the Leichhardt Highway near Wowan on Tuesday morning, just after 8am.

Sadly, Steve Latimer, aged 52, a well known CQ tow truck driver, and Brian Shaw, aged 64, a Mount Morgan delivery driver, both died at the scene.

A serious crash was reported on Landsborough Highway near Longreach just after 9am on Wednesday morning.
