The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

An Australian Army veteran has spent more than two weeks in an induced coma after he was critically injured in a motorbike crash on the Capricorn Highway outside Emerald in September while attending the annual Southern Cross poker run.

Snow Maurice, who hails from Woombye in the Sunshine Coast, was involved in a single motorbike crash on the Capricorn Highway 10km outside of Emerald heading towards Longreach on September 2 about 2.30pm.

Snow was transported to Emerald Hospital in a critical condition.

A GoFundMe campaign was started by Lauren Stewart on behalf of Snow and had raised $700 as of October 9.

According to campaign organiser Ms Stewart, Snow took off on his motorbike with his trailer to take part in the annual Southern Cross charity ride, which attends yearly, at the end of August.

“Snow had left Emerald after lunch to continue on the ride when the drawbar on the trailer he was towing snapped and threw Snow from his bike at 100kms an hour,” Ms Stewart shared in the GoFundMe campaign.

Snow was flown to Brisbane by the Royal Flying Doctor Service and admitted to the intensive care unit at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

“Snow spent just over two weeks in an induced coma with 10 broken ribs, a broken shoulder and collar bone and multiple spinal fractures,” Ms Stewart shared.

“With him only being born with one kidney, three quarters of his kidney has died as a result of the accident leaving him needing ongoing dialysis plus many other aides.

“While in the induced coma, Snow stopped responding and they rushed him for an emergency MRI as they were concerned his spinal cord had been severed.

“After clearance from the MRI, Snow was transferred to the trauma ward where he thankfully only spent a week and then was transferred again to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.”

Ms Stewart shared that although having Snow closer to his home in Woombye had been great, unexpected accommodation, food and transportation had taken its toll.

“Due to Snow being the main income for his family and the long road ahead things have become extremely tight,” she shared.

“He still remains in hospital and is needing ongoing treatment and rehabilitation which does not come cheap.

“What we are asking of you all is that we come together as one and help Snow who has helped so many others in his lifetime when he needs it the most.

“Being a veteran who served 20 years in the Australian Army he now needs our help and support.”

A charity ride had also been organised to show support for Snow and his family.

According to the Facebook event, the charity ride will take place on October 29 with riders meeting at CJ’s Pastries in Woodford at 8.30am and riding to Woombye Centre.

All riders are asked to make a donation with all money going to Snow.
