The CQ Capras have won their first three games of the season to be sitting two points clear on top of the BMD Premiership ladder.

Their most recent win came against Souths Logan Magpies at Browne Park on Saturday.

They scored in the opening minute through centre Jess Powell and were never headed, going on to win 26-16.

Coach Amanda Ohl described it as another gritty win.

“There were probably a few too many errors but again we showed this ability to stick there and grind it out,” she said.

Sharni Upton goes in for one of the Capras five tries in their Round 3 win over Souths Logan Magpies.

“We started both halves very well. We stuck to the game plan but then got ahead of ourselves a little bit and went away from the game plan. We probably pushed the pass a little bit too much and started finding ourselves under pressure.

“But as I said to the girls, no matter how we win, we’re still three and zero. No one’s going to look back at the end of the year and say ‘Oh geez, we should have played better here’.”

Keysha Baker’s effort in defence was a highlight of the win, with the pint-sized fullback producing two chase down tackles to prevent what appeared to be certain tries for Souths.

The Capras made it three straight wins in the BMD Premiership on Saturday.

Hooker Mackenzie Reid worked tirelessly, topping the tackle count with 30, while prop Kristine Vaalepu was instrumental in getting the team on the front foot with some inspired runs.

The Capras’ next assignment will be the Brisbane Tigers in Brisbane on April 23.

Anticipation is building around that game, with the Capras to welcome in NRLW and State of Origin star Tamika Upton and her Brisbane Broncos teammate Hayley Maddick.
