An innovative player swap has landed one of rugby league’s most exciting prospects at the CQ Capras.

Morea Morea, 24, will play his first game in the maroon and blue this weekend after a deal was struck with fellow Hostplus Cup club, the PNG Hunters.

He comes in while powerhouse prop Khaiya Waiembi will return to Papua New Guinea to join the Hunters after playing a total of 20 games with the Capras since his debut in March 2024.

The swap adds another dimension to the strong partnership between the two clubs.

Aspirational players from the island country have for more than a decade been lining up with the Capras as they pursue their NRL dreams.

Among them is brilliant back rower and PNG international Nixon Putt, who has now made 68 appearances for the Capras.

The clubs have also been playing a pre-season trial since 2023, with the venue alternated each year.

Capras’ head coach Lionel Harbin said it was a positive for both clubs and both players.

“Due to our injuries and looking at what we were trying to improve with our attack, we needed a fullback/half and Morea Morea was available,” he said.

Khaiya Waiembi will finish out the season with the PNG Hunters after seven games this season for the Capras.

“We reached out to the PNG Hunters and were able to come up with a deal where Khaiya returns to them and Morea will finish the year with us.

“Khaiya is a player with a lot of potential and is a phenomenal athlete and, while it’s tough to see him leave, this move was probably the best for him.

“He gets to train in a full-time environment and be closer to his family.

“The Capras would like to thank Khaiya and his services over the last 18 months.”

Morea was the 2023 Hostplus Cup Rookie of the Year and made his Test debut with the PNG Kumuls in November last year.

A dynamic outside back with explosive speed and attacking flair, he will be a welcome addition to the Capras, who are desperate to find some points after losing their past five games.

After less than a week in Rockhampton, Morea has been named at fullback for Saturday’s clash against the Mackay Cutters.

He joins his countrymen Putt, Zev John and Valentine Richard in the line-up.

Harbin can’t wait to see what he will deliver.

“He’s an exciting player, who moves really well,” he said.

“It’s great to be able to give him this opportunity.”
