From chopsticks to dumbbells; 34 James Street in Yeppoon could soon have a new lease of life.

Formerly a Chinese restaurant, the building sold in June 2021 for $730,000.

The new owners, who are based on the Capricorn Coast, have lodged plans with Livingstone Shire Council to transform the space into an indoor gym.

According to the plans, the existing building would be renovated with floor-to-ceiling windows to allow natural light and an updated building facade.

There would also be a reception area at the front door with a cafe and servicer counter.

The rear part of the existing buildings would be demolished to make way for an extension which would accommodate a new office, separate male and female amenities and an additional gymnasium floor area.

It is proposed the gym would operate from 4.30am to 7pm, Monday to Friday and 6am to 9am on weekends.

Peak hours are expected in the early morning and late afternoon.

Council planning officers have requested more information on how the building design would address noise compliance to nearby homes.

There are currently eight gyms in Yeppoon.

The application is now being assessed by council.
