But when Pierre Guillemin went to get the ring re-sized it fell out of his pocket and was lost forever.

How our engagement party suddenly became a wedding

Despite a frantic search around Brisbane’s South Bank, Pierre ended up having to order a replacement ring and eventually confessed what had happened to bride-to-be Kelly Mathews.

“Now when people tell me they’re engaged the first thing I say is ‘insure the ring’,” laughs Kelly.

Drama aside, the couple, who live at Bardon, in Brisbane’s inner-west, held a “micro garden wedding for 11” at Pierre’s parents’ back yard in Fingal Head, NSW, overlooking the lagoon. Framed by casuarina trees, roses and fairy lights, the space was both simple and whimsical.

For the reception, Gold Coast Tipis installed a beautiful canvas tipi and filled it with a long table covered in eucalyptus and roses, laden with candles and lit with festoon lighting.

Guests enjoyed an oyster and raw fish bar directly after the ceremony, with
Dom Perignon and canapes, followed by
a sit-down dinner of fish, roast beef and locally sourced sides.

How did Pierre propose?

Pierre had grand plans of an epic proposal, but the weather had other ideas. We were living in Clermont at the time and had driven out to Mackay for a weekend by the sea. The night he wanted to propose the weather came in, it was cold and pouring with rain, so no epic proposal — but confess his love he did.

What made this uniquely your wedding?

Pierre’s sister Natalie was scheduled to visit Australia from Nicaragua with her partner and their twin girls. We could never quite imagine our wedding without her in attendance, so in March we decided to get married while she was here. Because the event was so scaled down, we could really incorporate what was important to us — family, great food and wine, classic styling and our love of the outdoors. We wrote our vows and kept them secret until the ceremony, our sisters gave readings (that made me cry), Pierre’s dad was the keeper of the rings and our mums were our witnesses. It was so personal and full of love and so us.

Special memories?

We spent time on Fingal Headland having photos taken. Sadly, my dad Ron died suddenly five years ago and I’ve associated birds with his spirit ever since. As we were standing on the headland an osprey flew low over our heads several times. I’ve been to the same place dozens of times and I haven’t ever seen this behaviour before — it was goosebump material.
