A well-known Noosa rugby player was found slurring his words with empty and unopened cans at his feet at the scene of his crashed van before he blew more than four times over the limit.

Police were called to a car crash on Boxing Day last year where they found a 23-year-old behind the wheel of the van that had crashed into a Holden Rodeo.

Borore Todd Howton from Woombye was driving back from the Sunshine Beach Surf Club at 7.31pm when he lost control of the vehicle.

Police spoke to Howton after seeing the crash.

“Howton was speaking slow, slurring his words and had trouble focusing,” police prosecutor Sergeant Alison Johnstone said.

“In the van there were some empty UDL cans and unopened cans.”

Howton blew a positive roadside breath test and was then taken to hospital where he recorded a BAC of 0.223.

Borore Howton pleaded guilty in Noosa Magistrates Court on Tuesday to driving over the high alcoholic limit and driving without due care and attention.

Defence lawyer Bernard Bradley said Howton had a limited traffic history and entered a very early plea of guilty.

“He will have to go on an interlock program now and is otherwise a person of good character,” Mr Bradley said.

Mr Bradley said Howton works two jobs in landscaping and retail while also studying construction management.

“He went to school locally and plays for local rugby clubs,” he said,

Magistrate Hadyn Stjernqvist said Howton’s reading was “astronomical” and fined him $1300.

He was banned from driving for 10 months and had convictions recorded.
