Mikaela Dombkins will make her Mackay debut after playing for Meteorettes in SEQ triple-header

Mackay is set to ‘definitely benefit’ from the inclusion of the WNBL star who spent more than a decade playing at the top level.

The toughest debut imaginable will provide a solid foundation for WNBL star as she prepares to play her first homegame for Mackay.

Guard Mikaela Dombkins has spent more than a decade playing for a number of teams in the WNBL, and made her debut for the Meteorettes in the triple-header in Brisbane.

Meteorettes coach Scott McKenzie said he was excited to welcome a player of Dombkins calibre to the side.

“She’s the ultimate leader and scorer, she’s really dangerous with the ball in hand and I think our team will definitely benefit from having her,” he said.

“Last weekend was a pretty tough initiation for Mikaela, she didn’t train with us and we eased her into it, but by Sunday she was feeling comfortable and that’s only going to improve as she starts training and building chemistry.”

Dombkins’ best outing in the triple-header was against Northside, where she scored 21 points from 62 per cent shooting, as well as collecting eight rebounds and six assists.

McKenzie said he was pleased with the mix of talent the Meteorettes had acquired.

“Mikaela has come in to fill Cayla George’s spot as the veteran, even though she plays smaller than Cayla,” he said.

“The way we play changes and our structure is a bit different now since we’re a bit smaller, but it allows Chelsea Brook and Jacqui Zelenka to really shine in their tall roles.”
