Mackay Meteors to host Logan Thunder in fight for top spot

Top spot is on the line in the NBL1 North when Mackay hosts Logan after a perfect triple-header.

A perfect weekend of basketball has given the Meteors the chance to jump Logan when the top two sides meet at the Crater.

Mackay won all three of its games on the trip to Brisbane at the weekend, with 32, 19 and 33-point victories in the triple-header.

Meteors coach Joel Khalu said he was pleased with the side’s ability to find the in-form player.

“The great thing with our group is when someone gets rolling everyone is happy to feed the hot player and that’s the unselfish nature of our squad,” he said.

“We never go into a game thinking that one or two guys will have to deliver, we’re open to change based on who’s going well and that’s a real strength of the squad.”

Mackay will play the Thunder for top spot in the NBL1 North, which had been previously undefeated until an upset loss against Sunshine Coast.

Despite the loss, Khalu said the side was not taking anything away from Logan’s credentials.

“They are a terrific team who was on a roll, so they’ll be coming into this weekend really hungry to get back on track,” he said.

“They’re a legitimate championship calibre team, they are probably favourites at the moment so it’ll be a really good challenge to see where we’re at.”

Logan will play Rockhampton on Friday night before travelling into Mackay, and Khalu said it was a small advantage for the Meteors.

“The extra travel, three-and-a-half extra hours in a bus will take its toll, and we need to be able to put them under pressure from the get-go,” he said.

“They’re a professional outfit though, I’m sure they’ll have some tricks up their sleeve to keep themselves as fresh as possible coming into town.”
