From the outside looking in, fans would be disappointed with another capitulating loss for the Cutters on Sunday.
Mackay lost to Souths Logan Magpies 38-20, which left the Cutters on the bottom of the table.
Mackay coach Michael Crawley said he saw positives in the defeat in Brisbane.
“We started really well, we were competitive with our opening 25 minutes, but after that every time we scored we would let in a soft try or make an error,” he said.
“It’s an experience thing, we’ve got 19-year-olds coming off the bench so it’s difficult when they’re competing with older guys.”
Cowboy Daejarn Asi was one of the Cutters’ best players on Sunday, with the young halfback putting the Magpies under pressure with his kicking.
“Daejarn was the main man in the game, his talk is so good for someone that’s only 20 years old,” Crawley said.
“He’ll be putting a bit of pressure on the halves at the Cowboys, his kicking game was strong and he put their experienced back five under pressure.”

Mackay will have another bye before playing Papua New Guinea on the Gold Coast, and Crawley said the disruption caused was hurting the side.
“For the younger guys in their first year, it gives them an opportunity to get their bodies right with the wear and tear, but I know the older guys are struggling to get into a rhythm of the year,” he said.
“Even the teams winning would find it disruptive to get into a rhythm, but it is what it is and we all have a bye together.”
