Heartbreak came in the form of brotherly love at the Crater, with Meteors guard Chris Cedar watching his sibling Michael hit a match-sealing basket over his defence.
The two brothers, playing for Mackay and Logan, gave the crowd a contest all night, with Michael hitting a three-point shot over Chris to extend Thunder’s lead to four with just 1.30 left.
Meteors coach Joel Khalu said Chris could not have done much more.
“We started Chris on Mick; for the most part, Chris did a good job on him,” he said.
“Mick’s that guy who could go 0-5 shooting until the end and makes that shot, that’s the championship-winning player he is and the moments aren’t too big for him to take a big-time shot.”
Logan Thunder coach Luke Cann said the late-game performance was “in Michael’s DNA”.
“It’s what he does, and it’s also what Chris does, they hit big shots,” he said.
“There are nights where you just don’t notice him all night, then he comes out with a shot like that to essentially lock away the win.”
Emmanuel Malou and Jerron Jamerson enjoyed productive nights, with Malou scoring 28 points and Jamerson 21.
Khalu said he was happy with the productivity of his stars.
“I challenged Jerron to go out and play hard on both ends, he still needs to work on one or two things to become a great two-way player,” he said.
“Offensively he went out and grabbed the game and was aggressive in making some plays, he plays with a lot of swagger and that’s his DNA.”
The loss will keep Mackay second on the ladder with nine wins and three losses as the side prepares for a finals run.
